Yellowstone National Park

Visitors to Yellowstone National Park in May are here to view the animals of Yellowstone.

Animals are seen in virtually every open field and on most hillsides.

The bald eagle can be seen all summer long.

In May, bison and elk alike can easily be seen from the road in the safety of your car.

The animals primary activity is eating.

As summer progresses, the animals will venture farther from human territory as the snows of winter melt up in the mountains, making food more easily accessible there.

More eating.

If they aren't eating, they are likely to be staring at you wondering what the heck you are.

And sometimes you will find them sitting down and resting...both old and young alike.

Buffalo Wy. to West Yellowstone Mt.

What a difference a day can make. The winds had stopped and the sun was out. Ahead is where we had to stop on the highway the day before. You could see the road today.

It's hard not to snap a few pictures on the way. Look at the lake in the distance.

You know you are getting closer to West Yellowstone when you are greeted by bison.

We made it to West Yellowstone and set up camp next to co-workers who also came back this year.

Nice view from our front window.

Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Devils Tower National Monument was the first declared United States National Monument, established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.

It can be seen distinctly from many miles away.

The tower is located in northeastern Wyoming above the Belle Fourche River.

Devils Tower grew in popularity when it was used in the 1977 blockbuster "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

Be on the lookout for abundant deer near the monument.

Tower Trail is a 1.3 mile paved trail which encircles the monument.

Walking Tower Trail...

The monument is wider than Doug's arm span.
Tower Trail has a few easy inclines and switchbacks.

Prayer cloths are tied to trees by members of American Indian tribes as part of their religious practices.

About 4,000 visitors each year choose to climb the face of Devils Tower.
The summit of the tower falls just short of one-mile above sea level.

Did you know that American prairie dogs currently occupy only 2% of the total area which they occupied 200 years ago?
Don't feed the prairie dogs.

The KOA at the entrance to Devils Tower boasts a large deer population.
As we leave, the sun starts to set on Devils Tower.

Yellowstone Park with Doug's Parents

Yesterday, Bob and Jean arrived in town and watched the Yellowstone IMAX Movie.

Today, we showed them around Yellowstone.

Norris Geyser Basin is the home of this beautiful blue pool.

A non-painted buffalo grazed near the road.

It was a very windy day at Lower Falls.
A bird has made its nest atop these rocks in the middle of the canyon.
Here's an eerie-looking hole in the volcanic landscape of Yellowstone.

Sulphur Cauldron smells like...sulphur.
Yellowstone Lake is the largest lake at this altitude in the world.
The Kepler Cascades roar along.
The crowd gathers for the next showing of Old Faithful.
These elk wonder: What's Old Faithful?
The HHR makes a great tourmobile.

Midnight at Old Faithful

Ever wonder if Old Faithful erupts in the dark of night? We wondered and we went to see.

It was pretty chilly at midnight.

Marlon couldn't quite make out Old Faithful's eruption.

When driving in Yellowstone, always be aware at Buffalo Crossings.

We happened upon this elk grazing by moonlight.

He acted like Marlon was just another elk and kept on eating.
